New  Sparks

Spark is delighted to announce the addition of several new members to the Spark Council and Board Communities. These people join our Communities to help chart Spark's ambitious path to better serve designers, and help designers better serve our society. The Spark Community Boards act as a sounding board and reflect the interests of their communities. Members also add special professional expertise to help support Spark efforts in important areas. We welcome these great new friends:

Chee Pearlman is one of the most recognized names in the world of design. Chee is Program Director for The Art Center Design Conference (Serious Play, May 7-9, 2008), was founding Chair and Producer (10 years) of the Chrysler Design Awards and former Editor-in-Chief of I.D. Magazine. She will be a wonderful asset to SparkWorld and the Advisory Council.

Mark Charmer is an ex-Hill & Knowlton hand, bringing to Spark a sparkling vitality, fountain of ideas and deep knowledge of world commerce. His consultancy specializes in Public Development issues-- in particular water resources and mobility. Check out his valiant and successful efforts at Akvo and Movement Design Bureau.

Steve Smith is a financial maven with a long-abiding interest in "world-changing design." His latest project is called "Toward Consilience," tasked with taking existing complex data sets and turning them into software that people can use to solve real world problems. Thus, we'll have a new tool to help financial structures better understand (and finance) the mega changes needed to address issues like global warming. Steve is Senior Managing Director at Ritchie Capital, past Managing Director, GE Equity and Managing Director, Ventures at GE Capital. Steve is joining the Spark Development Group initiative, chaired by frog design co-founder Patricia Roller.

Manuel Saez, one of America's best young product designers, has work in the current exhibit at MoMA and is the recipient of over 59 top awards--including two Sparks, and one of our predecessor competition's Designing Worlds. His design and development firm, manuelsaez ltd., is based in New York City and Guangzhou, China, and dedicated to creating "beautiful comfort."

Christian Banfield is a UK based photographer and filmmaker with a vibrant practice. His clients range from Sony to Nokia and H-P. Christian also directs commercials and creates corporate films through his production company "schmick TV. "  He has joined Drew Takahashi, Dave Gottlieb, Robert Yuhas, John Pattyson and Jared Hendler on our SparkTV and DesignTube initiative, to help us create video Sparks.

Eddy Yu is the recent and founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Designers Association, a prestigious group with very similar goals to Spark, and co-Founder of CoDesign Ltd. Eddy has won more than 80 awards in design competitions and his work has been featured in prominent local and international design publications. Eddy is our first Board member from Asia and we are very honored to welcome him.

Jared Hendler Jared was recently appointed Worldwide Executive Creative Director for Edelman Digital. Jared's  brings over 20 years of creative management experience in digital branding, design, advertising and technology.  Jared co-founded G2 at WPP’s Grey Advertising and led the growth of the firm in over a dozen international markets.  Most recently, Art Center grad Hendler founded SmashTube, a digital media and branded entertainment strategy shop.  Jared is the author of a forward-thinking digital media blog.  He is a prior board member of the Art Directors Club and is a Blue Ribbon Judge for the Emmy Award's new broadband category. Jared will help thread Spark into the woof and weave of the web. Best!

Other News--
Exec Council member Marc Gobé has recently set up a New York shop named after his new book, "Emotional Branding." Check it out--Exciting place to be. Bon Chance, Marc.
