CHALLENGERS

By late August, 2008, the final batch of Phase I entries had been judged. This was in accordance with the two-phase procedure of the new Spark Awards competition "...to accommodate the greatest possible range of designs and designers, and to lower the initial cost of entry, the SparkAwards are configured as a "two-phase" competition--just like a sports playoff series. In Phase I, entrants upload 3 images of their work and short mission statement to the Spark website."

Three highly regarded designers accepted invitations to review designs during the Spark Phase I Challenge. The panel included Manuel Saez, of Manuel Saez Design, NY; David Meckel, California College of Art and Kit Hinrichs, Partner, Pentagram Design. The panel judged the Phase I works throughout the month.

Each winning Challenger has their work displayed in the online Challenger Gallery below, and received a Challengers Award Certificate attesting to their status. Here is a quote from their notification letter:

Dear Spark Entrant
We are delighted to inform you that at least one of your entries has qualified as a Spark Challenger, and is considered "in show." We and our independent judges were very pleased with the high caliber of entries, and many are going forward to the live jurying. All Challengers had to receive two votes or more from the review panel of three judges. Spark personnel did not participate in the voting.

Again, this was a a very fine overall group of designs--clearly, our entrants edited and refined their work to a high standard. Thus, our judges had a tough selection job, and happily many works did make it to Phase II.

Again, our heartiest concratulations on your successful Challenge. Thanks for Sparking. All Best!
